Krys wins GF Eddy Merckx; among women victory of Vaccaroni

11/06/2012

Krys wins GF Eddy Merckx in Rivalta di Brentino Belluno (VR); Dorina Vaccaroni wins among women. In Mediofondo successes for Pontalto and Schartmüller. Good results for the 6° edition, valid as fourth stage of Challenge Giordana.

There is a new “Cannibal” on the streets of Verona and Trento, it is the Polish Hubert Krys, ex professionist, now member of Asd Cicli Copparo, who won Granfondo Internazionale Eddy Merckx on the long path (155.5 km) as Dorina Vaccaroni did among women, while in Mediofondo won Andrea Pontalto and Astrid Schartmüller. 2,175 subscripted, but a few less on the grid in Rivalta di Brentino of Belluno (VR) with some participants, perhaps, frightened by the uncertain weather, which has instead given us a good day after all for most sunny and cool in altitude, with a few drops on Monte Baldo. At the start there were also Eddy Merckx, the girls of MCipollini Giambenini Gauss,  Alessia Piccolo and rthe cyclists of Farnese Vini Selle Italia. There wasn’t, instead, luca Scinto, after the challenge of the previous day with Merckx and his cyclists.

The first kilometres in Valpolicella, with the first ascent, the one of Mazzurega; the time of the battle rang in the ascent towards Breonio valid for the “time trial of the Cannibal”.  At this point some cyclists came in the open, the Polish, Italian by adoption, Hubert Krys found the right moment to break away and give a jolt to the competition, but the rider of the team Maggi Alfonso Falzarano followed him immediately. The best time trial of Cronoscalata was the one of Falzarano (22’02’‘), which preceded of a little Krys, then Gufler, Salani, Pinton, Cappè, Zen and Pontalto.

To complete its 1,700 metres of difference in level, for mediofondo there was still the descend from Fosse to Peri, the Veronese Davide Spiazzi took the initiative and try to fly away in escape to victory, while granfondisti gwent towards Trentino. A group of five elements, formed by Pontalto, Masiero, Salani, Gufler and the winner of 2011 Camozzi, reached Spiazzi, a few kilometres from the finish of Rivalta. So Mediofondo was decided by a sprint twith the victory of Andrea Pontalto expert in time trials (2h19’42’‘), second Camozzi and third Masiero.

Among women third victory in a stage of Challenge Giordana for Astrid Schartmüller. She won in 2h33’56’’ and she won also the Cronoscalata (27’40’‘),; second Christiane Bitante, third Erica Venturini.

Truly long the final climb, with Falzarano and Krys had the strength to stick, despite the more than 100 km already done. At Refuge Graziani at 1656 metres they had an advantage of about 30’’ on Bertuola and Zen.  However, during the descent the four granfondisti were all together. The race was decided by a sprint, won by Krys; second Zen, third Bertuola fourth Falzarano.

Dorina Vaccaroni (5h26’19’‘) dominated among women, winning with an advantage of 10’ on Martina Egger and 11’ on Lorna Ciacci. A great satisfaction for the Olympic Vaccaroni, especially in a race with a high rate of women like GF Eddy Merckx. This is not only for the large number of women among the organization and for the participation of professional cyclists as Guderzo and Carretta, but also for the many women on the starting grid. For them a special thought, a phrase on the race package: “all women are born princesses, then life will be to train them as warriors”. A message from granfondista to granfondiste, made by Alessia Piccolo after making sure that everything was in order,  she competed on “average” of 85 km in 3h39’28’’ bringing to an end.

GF Eddy Merckx was a success, going on even more interest in the Challenge Giordana, whose next race will be GF Giordana dell’Aprica, with severe Gavia and Mortirolo.
